| The lantern | A brass storm lantern is the recurring warm light across the whole set - on the path, on a windowsill, on the kitchen table, in a child's hands, hanging from a waymarker. Ember uses sunlight and church candles. The lantern is the thing you carry, which is the point of the book. It is on both covers and in the cover medallion. |
| The trail | Every outdoor frame has a visible track, path or footprints. The brand is named after it. In their imagery the path is scenery; here it is the subject, and it always leads somewhere. |
| The kirkeskib | The votive ship hanging from the vault - a real and very Danish church tradition. It reads as Denmark instantly and never as American church stock. Appears in the interior, the altar and the pew shots. |
| The light | Cool silver-blue Nordic shadows against warm highlights, instead of their single amber wash. Danish locations throughout: dunes, heather, marram grass, rapeseed, North Sea sky, whitewashed stepped-gable churches. No cypress, no Tuscany. |
